How to keep your water clear in 3 easy steps

It’s not always easy to maintain the purity of the water in a pond without it turning green. When we talk about ‘water quality’, we are referring to the many physico-chemical parameters of the water, such as hardness, pH, concentration of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, etc. It is crucial to pay attention to these parameters if you want the water in your pond to be well-balanced.

Preliminary step: always measure the water balance

This step is essential before adding anything to your water. Pond management is not about throwing random products into the water and waiting to see what happens next. It’s a bit like when we fall ill. Sometimes we prefer to self-medicate without looking at the real symptoms and this proves ineffective. Conclusion: we have to run to the doctor, who prescribes the appropriate treatment, and the healing process follows.

The idea is much the same. Before you can tackle the problem, you have to measure it. This step is crucial to understanding how to take care of your pond with the right treatment.

Not equipped to make the diagnosis yourself? Take a sample of your water and visit your nearest garden centre or shop. Encode the results in our Aqualyser application and receive a quick analysis.

1. Mineralise

Getting the mineral content of your pond right is an essential preliminary step to achieving the right balance in your pond. You will need to find the right balance between GH-KH-pH for the following steps to be effective. Using our application will simplify the task. You will know exactly which products to use and how much to add to your water.

2. Clean

This step is more curative. It is nevertheless essential if you want to remove organic materials such as algae. This could disturb the balance of your water by increasing the presence of pollutants such as phosphates.

We will say it often, but Aquatic Science’s philosophy is to advocate prevention rather than reaction, so as to act upstream to avoid having to opt for a curative solution. Anticipation is the key.

3. Maintain

Natural bacterial filtration is still the best way to maintain your pond. Remember to regularly inoculate your filter with bacteria that will assimilate the pond’s organic load. In this way, you create a natural balance based on the principle of the circular economy. In other words, you create a virtuous circle: one person’s waste feeds another’s, and vice versa.

The Aqualyser app: measuring water means mastering it.

As experts in natural water management, we advocate constant monitoring of water quality, allowing optimum management of the pond while acting to protect biodiversity.

To make your life easier, and to enable you to be autonomous when it comes to measuring your water parameters, we have developed the Aqualyser. It’s free, intuitive software for interpreting water parameters so you can manage your pond water efficiently and optimally.
